The 'i engine was introduced mid-year '87. It remained basically the
same until '91 when it was replaced by the new M50 style 6cyl.
The 3-series exterior was as follows:
1987: early e30 body style, big aluminum bumpers, sealed beam headlights
models: 325, 325e, 325es, 325i, 325is
1988: late e30 body style, big aluminum bumpers, elipsoidal headlights
models: 325(super eta), 325i, 325is
1989: late e30 body style, small body colored bumpers, elipsoidal headlights
models: 325i, 325is
1990-91: late e30 body style, small body colored bumpers, sealed beam
headlights, air-bag in steering wheel
models: 318i, 318is, 325i, 325isN
Interior:
'87-'89 same, except for stereo upgrades
'90-'91 same, except for section under steering wheel is redesigned
